Trip to the Aquarium- L'Acquario

Between Christmas and New Year's, we came home to take care of some previous engagements and had the chance to visit the Living Planet Aquarium with James' brother Jason and his family. It was so much fun and they kids really enjoyed touching the stingrays and the baby shark. We saw all sorts of animals, penguins, snakes, otters, anacondas, a giant octopus, caimans, piranhas and so on.
Tra Natale e Capodanno, siamo tornati a casa e abbiamo avuto l'occasione di andare a visitare L'Acquario con il fratello di James, Jason e la sua famiglia. Ci siamo divertiti molto e ai bambini e` piaciuto molto toccare il cucciolo di squale e la pasticana. C'era di tutto, dai pinguini, ai serpenti, le lontre, l'anaconda, la piovra gigante, i caimani, i piranha ecc. ecc.

Christmas 2012-Natale 2012

This Christmas was the first one since Vittoria's passing that we put up a big tree, the Christmas village and the Nativity scene. I so didn't want to, it just didn't feel right, but our Jacomo is little older now, and we want him to have good memories of the Christmas season in our home. He has no fault for what happened and not decorating the house felt more like punishing him by missing out on the whole experience. So of course, he was thrilled to help decorate the tree and set up the village. As I looked at his excitement, I took it all in and sent a grateful look heavenward for this little boy who, without knowing it, or maybe he did, saved his parents.
Questo Natale e` stato il primo da quando e` scomparsa Vittoria che abbiamo fatto l'albero, con presepe e villaggio natalizio. Proprio non volevo e non mi sembrava giusto, ma il nostro Jacomo e` piu` grande adesso e vogliamo che abbia dei bei ricordi del Natale nella nostra casa. Non ha colpa per quello che e` successo e non decorare la casa sembrava piu` una punizione e fargli mancare l'intera esperienza. Ovvio che era contentissimo di aiutare a fare l'albero e il villaggio. Lo guardavo cosi` pieno di gioia e ho rivolto uno sguardo riconoscente verso il cielo per questo figlio che, senza saperlo, ha salvato i genitori.

We spent this Christmas with James' family at the cabin in the mountains. We arrived on the 22nd in the later afternoon and boy, was it cold! It got even colder when we were told that we would have to snowmobile into the cabin. I remember getting out of the warmth of the truck, and being hit by a wall of freezing and windy air. The thermometer read -3!!! We quickly got dressed, but it was cold that my coat wouldn't zip up and the tips of my fingers were numb! Overall though, it was awesome pulling our bags and food in the sleds behind the snowmobiles!! I think the coldest it got while we were there was -6 and it's something I won't forget easily! :)
Abbiamo trascorso questo Natale con la famiglia di James alla baita in montagna. Siamo arrivati nel tardo pomeriggio del 22 dicembre e quanto faceva freddo! Mi sembrava che avesse fatto ancora piu` freddo quando ci hanno detto che avremmo dovuto guidare le motoslitte fino alla baita. Ricordo di essere uscita dal caldo del pickup e di essere andata a sbattere contro un muro di aria gelida. Il termometro registrava -19.4 gradi!!! Ci siamo vestiti di corsa, ma faceva talmente freddo che la cerniera della mia giacca non si chiudeva e le punta delle mie dita erano completamente intorpidite! Nonostante tutto, e` stato bellissimo trainare le nostre valigie e i viveri nelle slitte dietro alle motoslitte! Mi sono sentita molto Ambrogio Fogar! Penso che la temperatura piu` bassa raggiunta durante il nostro soggiorno era di -22 gradi ed e` sicuramente un'esperienza che non dimentichero` facilmente! :)

Dec 25th, 2012- Christmas morning finally came! All the kids rushed down the stairs and were so excited to see their presents. Jacomo approached his gifts with caution, with a serious look on his face, almost like he didn't believe that the castle he had been pining for was really in front of him. And then a huge smile broke out and he never really cared for any other present he got. Santa Claus must have read his letter right!

                                        To Our Daughter Vittoria

40 Months- 40 Mesi

Thanks to a Christmas party in Price, we were able to go down and bring Vittoria's Christmas wreath for her grave. We put a sparkly purple butterfly on the top and Aunt Tori added the little Christmas decorations on each side of the wreath. I don't particularly like this time of the year when the lawn is brown and ugly, the trees have lost all the leaves and it feels even more depressing.
Grazie ad una festa di Natale, siamo riusciti ad andare a Price e portare una ghirlanda di Natale sulla tomba di Vittoria. Abbiamo aggiunto una farfalla viola sbrilluccicante e zia Tori ha portato le piccole decorazioni natalizie ai lati della ghirlanda. Non amo questo periodo dell'anno in modo particolare, il prato e` marrone e brullo, gli alberi sono spogli delle loro foglie e tutto sembra molto piu` deprimente.

It has been 40 months, but trust me, it feels like yesterday, we still see her in the places we go to and in the things we do as a family. Every day is hard, but holidays are especially difficult and tender, and even more so Christmas.
Sono passati 40 mesi, ma credetemi, sembra ieri, la vediamo nei luoghi dove andiamo e nelle attivita` che facciamo in famiglia. Ogni giorno e` duro, ma le feste sono particolarmente difficili e delicati e ancora di piu` il Natale.

The couple of weeks preceding the Christmas Season are always extremely busy, but thankfully I was able to take a break and go to lunch with my Italian friends and chat until the early hours of the afternoon.
Le settimane che precedono il Natale sono di solito sempre molto indaffarate, ma fortunatamente sono riuscita a fare una pausa e ad incontrare le mie amiche italiane per una pizza e a chiacchierare fino al pomeriggio.

A couple of days later, James' sister Mary and her family stopped by to visit and Jacomo loved having his cousins to play with.

Un paio di giorni dopo, la sorella di James, Mary e la sua famiglia ci sono venuti a fare una visita e Jacomo si e` divertito molto a giocare con le cuginette.

Christmas Lights & Santa Claus 2012- Luci di Natale & Babbo Natale 2012

For a Family Home Evening, we decided together with our best friends and their kids to go to Temple Square to see the Christmas Lights and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere that just a place like this has. So, first stop was the Nativity where we heard the story of Jesus' birth, then we walked around and look at the millions colorful lights that decorate trees and buildings.

Per la Serata Famigliare, abbiamo deciso con i nostri migliori amici e i loro figli di andare a Temple Square a vedere le Luci di Natale e di goderci la bellissima atmosfera che solo un posto come questo puo` creare. La prima fermata e` stata la Nativita` dove abbiamo ascoltato la storia della nascita di Gesu`, poi abbiamo camminato intorno e ammirato le milioni di luci colorate che adornano alberi ed edifici.

It was absolutely beautiful no matter how many times we see it, this is one of my favorite places in the world. Simply magical!
E` stato assolutamente stupendo indipendentemente da quante volte uno vede uno spettacolo cosi`, questo e` in assoluto uno dei miei posti preferiti. Semplicemente magico!

A few days later, Jacomo received a very unexpected visit from Santa Claus and his elves. It was down right funny to see Jacomo interact with Santa. For the past 4 months, Jacomo had been tormenting us with what he wanted for Christmas. Every minute of every day, all he could say was that he wanted a castle with the knights, the ogre, the dragon and so on. Interestingly enough, once Santa walked into our home,  Jacomo never utter another word, not even the word "castle". He kept his head down the whole time, so very shy even to answer Santa's questions. So when Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas, Jacomo ran to get his letter and gave it to Santa. This letter was very specific, to the point that Jacomo had included a ripped page of the magazine that featured the castle he wanted, just in case Santa would have brought him the wrong castle.
Qualche giorno dopo, Jacomo ha ricevuto una visita inaspettata da parte di Babbo Natale e i suoi elfi. E` stato divertente vedere Jacomo interagire con Babbo Natale, soprattutto perche` negli ultimi 4 mesi Jacomo ci ha tormentati con quello che voleva per Natale. Ogni minuto della giornata, l'unica cosa che diceva era che voleva era il castello con i cavalieri, l'orco, il drago, ecc. ecc. Interessante vedere che, una volta Babbo Natale e` entrato in casa, Jacomo non ha detto una parola, neanche la parola "castello". Ha tenuto la testa bassa tutto il tempo, era talmente timido che non ha neanche risposto alle domande di Babbo Natale. Cosi` quando Babbo Natale gli ha chiesto cosa voleva per Natale, Jacomo zitto zitto e` corso a prendere la letterina e l'ha data a Babbo Natale. Questa lettera e` molto precisa al punto che Jacomo aveva incluso la pagina strappata del giornale che mostrava il castello che voleva, in caso Babbo Natale gli avesse portato il castello sbagliato.
